SSKC Kata and Kumite Competition May 2007

A Great club competition, thank you to all our younger members that took part. It is invaluable to get used to competition at a young age, before the nerves set in.

Sensei Ash took the normal warm ups followed by some Kihon before the competition started.
The session was more around teaching students about competition and was kept as light as possible, quite a few students haven't even graded yet so we didn't want to frighten them off.

Above: Joe and Dom perform Heian Shodan

Above: Dom and Daniel perform Heian Yondan
Above: Josh and Michael, Heian Shodan - Michael has only been training with the club a few weeks and is due to grade in June for the first time. He is working very hard under the critical eye of his father Sensei Andy Denby who has also recently joined SSKC and the IJKA.

Above: Michael's Sister Georgia competes against Joe

Above: Michael wins through to the final!
He gives Rebecca a really good run for her money, after drawing against her twice the third time goes to the referees decision, not an easy decision for Bernard. Michael gets a highly commended second place, well done Michael.

We were very pleased to welcome Sensei Andy Bailey, an Ex SSKC member and an occasional visitor to the club when he is in the area visiting his parents. Andy kindly did some judging and presented the Kata thophies for us. Thanks Andy.

2nd Michael Denby
3rd Dominic Schilke
4th Joe Varga
Well done Joe an excellent result.

Above: Daniel and Rebecca had a long, long fight to decide the winner, how many times can you draw? well they were both very tired and had both received a few hard knocks from each other. In the photo I think Daniel has the upper hand, but Rebecca dug deep to fight back.

Above: Not quite sure why Sensei Helen is in Moksou when she is meant to be judging?

Sensei Ian Culpan was another welcome guest, his parents bought the club the Kumite trophy in the early 1980's and it was an honour to have Ian do some of the judging and present the trophy that his parents had bought so many years before. Thanks Ian.

New Belts for Helen and Thomas

We had our AGM last Sunday and one of the things we discuss is our club reward scheme. We are a non profit making club and from time to time we spend some of our funds on our members. We have given away Club polo shirts, Books from the Best Karate Series, Intermediate level Gis etc. We have decided that we will purchase embroidered Black Belts for Helen and Thomas.

I Have been looking at a few sites etc with reference to translating both our assocaation names and their names.

I found this very useful site Stock Kanji . com, below is the information for Helen and Thomas but they have thousands of stock names that will come in handy for belts or certificates etc.

Old Sweats - History of our Club

A month or so back Gullen Shihan gave me an old club sweatshirt, I thanked him and put it in my bag.

I have known the club goes back a few years but I still dont know how far.

The logo is for 1968 so It looks like the club goes back 40 years or so, at least. The sponsors on the sweatshirt were "Mortage Sense" from Selby, I believe they are still going strong as well.

I would like to research the history of the club and add it to the blog, hopefully a list of Instructors, when and where the club trained around Selby and any highlights etc.

If you are an old sweat of the club please email me with a piece of the jigsaw so I can try and slow put the history togeather.

Does anyone know what the clubs link with Mortgage Sense were?

June 2007 - York Course and Grading - Kato Shihan 8th Dan IJKA

Above: Kato Shihan instructs, Gullen Shihan 6th Dan IJKA in defence against mutiple attackers, there is something quite refreshing at seeing our senior grades getting shouted at. On a more serious note it is great to see our senior instructors still striving forward on "the way".

Sensei Billy Thomson IJKA Scotland, spoke to all Dan grades a few months ago about the importance of continuing to review our own and each others performance so that we can all improve, his message being strongly directed to 4th Dans and above. This continuing ambition of improvement is a Major strength of our association.

The details of Sensei's course and grading is as follows:

Saturday 16th June at Wiggington Recreation Hall, Wiggington , York. 1.30pm for 2pm to 4pm, All grades Training only.

Sunday 17th June at Wiggington Recreation Hall, Wiggington, York 9.30am for 10am to 1pm. All grades training and grading.

Training Fees :- £18 one day or two days, its the same price so get along to both days if you can.

Grading Fees: 9th Kyu to 1st Kyu £10 and for Pee Wee grades £6.

Don't forget if your grading you must come and train and the fee is £28 or £24 for training and grading. We wish all of the York District Karateka good luck and keep up our high standards.

    Two new Shodans at Selby!

Congratulations to both Helen and Thomas who both graded today at Whitchurch under the critical eye of Kato Shihan 8th Dan Chief Instructor of IJKA Europe and passed their Shodan exams.
Also congratulation to Sensei Nick from York who put in a strong performance for his Nidan grading.
No photos I'm afraid we were too busy training in the other room with Guillen Sensei.
I will publish some photos when they are both fully recovered and Sensei has sent their certificates over.
    Well done all of you.
    Osu!
