Kelvin's page has been updated, just click on his name in the side bar table of Kyu grades to see the details.

Kelvin has just returned from doing some charity work in Africa, I am sure I can persuade him to send me some photos to upload and perhaps a link to the charity that he was working with?

SSKC members - If you have not populated your page or would like to update it please e mail with the detail.

Many thanks Kelvin for your contribution, you would be surprised at how many visitors to the web site look through a few of the member pages, there is a genuine interest behind the membership.

Shihan rides Dave's Thunderace?

Above: Sensei prepares to take Dave's bike for a spin?
Fortunately for both Sensei and Dave, Sensei had problems with both the leathers and the helmet. I think both had shrunk as Dave passed them across the table, a bit like on "Little Britain", as things are passed to Dennis Waterman, but in reverse.
It was an incredible phenomena as Dave passed over first his leathers and then his helmet they became incredibly small??? The leathers didn't fit and then despite a lot of rowdy encouragement Sensei could not get the helmet on either.
Sensei was impressed by all the protective plates in the leathers, a quick demonstration of various empi techniques nearly saw the table split in two!

Course and Grading with Kato Shihan

This Weekend Kato Shihan came to York to run a course and grading for Haxby, York and Selby Shotokan Karate Clubs. Many thanks to Sensei Ian Shaw for running another great weekend. Osu!

Now and again Kato Shihan brings with him a visiting Karateka, I recognised her from Hungary and Rebecca said that she had competed with Fran in Kumite. I hope I have the name right, our visiting Karateka was Sensei Milena Galabova from Bulgaria.

Above: Kato Shihan had Galabova Sensei demonstrate for him

Above: More Kihon Training

Shihan Kato held a minutes silence on Sunday morning for remembrance Sunday.

    Congratulations Sarah!

On Friday I bumped into an old friend at a firework party, Sarah Cooke. Sarah started training with us when we first moved our club to Barlby in November 2003.
Sarah trained for 18 months until July 2005 and gained the rank of 8th Kyu, Sarah was juggling bringing up a young family and a degree course with her karate and something had to give.
I think it was Enodea Sensei that said "Family first, work second and Karate third".
Although Sarah has not trained for two years she asked about everyone in the club, she told me that she had included her Karate certificates in her CV, Sarah is very proud of her achievements in Shotokan and had recently got a job as an occupational therapist following her graduation.
Well done Sarah, 8th Kyu Karate ......Shodan in Occupational Therapy. Osu!

    Congratulations Sensei!

At the York course and grading Kato Shihan presented grading certificates to the chief instructors of York and Haxby Karate clubs. They had graded in June but neither of them knew until Saturday if they had passed or not.
    Above: Sensei Mike,Kato & Keith
Our congratulations go to Sensei Mike Gude promoted to 5th Dan and Shihan Keith Gullen promoted to 7th Dan.
    Above: Gullen Shihan 7th Dan
Our junior members may think that grading gets easier the further along "the way" you are, I am not so sure. I am more than aware of the additional training that our Sensei put themselves through to prepare for their gradings.
